through the looking glass
In through the looking glass… A peek into an old lady’s perspective on the divisive politics in America, I explore the 2020 election process through images of the candidates and their supporters.
The political theater, ceremonial pomp, protests, and counter-protests of the time reveal an energy and intimacy within and shed light on a very divided America. Throughout the zine, I use images and quotes to reflect the parallels between the political moment and Alice’s journey through Wonderland. Images were made during the Iowa caucus and New Hampshire primary, and in my home community, Albany, NY. While travel restrictions related to Covid-19 curtailed my travels to other 2020 political events, images were made from the television to document the chaos that ensued.
In many ways, the 2024 election was the same fight as 2020 but with higher stakes. Americans remain polarized along party, demographic, or ideological lines. Donald Trump won that election and is bringing forward his vision of presidential authority. It will be important to see whether America’s centuries-old experiment with democracy can handle the stress.
